Unique Elements
These earrings are an excellent example of the use of diamond, white gold and natural pearl that typify Art Deco. We love the sparkle of the diamonds against the glow of the pearls. We think everyone should enjoy the luster of a naturally formed pearl, which is a miracle of nature.

Natural Pearl A natural pearl is formed when an oyster’s defense mechanism is triggered by a microscopic irritant such as sand, causing it to produce protective layers called nacre, which develop into a pearl. Natural pearls form without human intervention. The earliest written account of natural pearls dates back to 2206 BC and they have been coveted for their natural beauty ever since. Due to pollution, over-harvesting and predators, natural pearls are very rare. Pearls can occur in every hue and their main, or bodycolor, is often modified by overtones, which can be pink, green, purple, or blue. Pearls can also exhibit iridescence, or ‘orient.’ A seed pearl is a small natural pearl, formed in either a saltwater oyster or freshwater mussel, that is usually less than 2mm in diameter. Pearl is a June birthstone.

Baroque Pearl South sea pearls are the largest of all pearls, typically ranging from 11-16mm. Baroque refers to a pearl which is asymmetrical, either round or oval or button. These two pearls are a highly desirable white color, with pink undertone.

Cushion Cut The cushion cut, which can be both a modern or “old mine” cut is a square or rectangular diamond with softly rounded corners, like a cushion. Most colored gems as well as diamonds were cushion cut in the 19th century, and it is one of the best diamond cuts for retaining natural color, which is why it remains popular for colored stones to this day. The old mine cut has 58 facets where a modern cushion cut typically has 64 facets.

Marquise Shape In the 18th century, King Louis XV of France commissioned a diamond shape to resemble the lips of his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, known as the marquise or navette shape. The name comes from French court royalty who wore the diamonds to indicate their rank, which is between a count and a duke. The marquise is used for colored stones as well as diamonds, and is typically a brilliant cut with up to the full cut of 57 to 58 facets.

Round Brilliant-Cut The Round Brilliant Cut dates back to 1919, when Marcel Tolkowsky calculated a formula for proportional diamond design to maximize fire, brilliance and wearability, published as “Diamond Design: A Study of the Reflection and Refraction of Light in Diamond.” A round brilliant diamond can also be called a full cut diamond if it features the cutting standard of 57 or 58 facets.
