Pink Tourmaline Tourmalines come in a wide range of colors, from red, pinks and peach to green, yellow and blues. Pink tones are caused by trace elements of manganese present in the soil as the tourmaline was forming. In the 1890s, California was a major source of pink tourmaline, most of which was exported to China as it was the favorite color of the Dowager Empress Tz'u Hsi. Tourmaline is an October birthstone, as well as the 8th wedding anniversary stone.

Citrine Citrine, a yellow to orange variety of quartz, is rare in nature. A November birthstone, as well as the stone marking the thirteenth wedding anniversary, citrines are one of the most popular yellow gemstones. Often identified with the Victorian era, citrine’s use as a gem dates back to 300 B.C.

Cabochon A cabochon is a gem which has been shaped and polished but not faceted, typically with a domed top and flat bottom. Cabochons are often cut for opaque stones, for softer translucent gems as well as to highlight phenomenon such as asterism “star” and chatoyancy “cat’s eye”, as these would not show in faceted stones. The 'sugarloaf' cabochon cut features a 4-sided pyramid shape.

Hematite Hematite, from the Greek haema or ' blood,' is an iron oxide that while silvery gray to black in appearance, in fact leaves a red streak if scratched against another surface. Hematite has been used in rings, pins, bracelets and necklaces since the ancient Egyptians carved it for seals.

Step Cut A Step-cut, which includes emerald and baguette-cuts, is a rectangular cut with faceting in steps. This style highlights the clarity and color of the stone. The Princess Cut features a straight sided rectangular outline with brilliant style faceting - a mix between step cut and brilliant cut. The "Calf's Head" is a less common step cut that resembles a triangle with the cut corners, thought to resemble a calf's head.

Inlay Inlay is the technique of applying thin gem material or metal to create decorative details on the surface of a base gem, bone, metal or wood material. Marqueterie is inlaid veneers placed together to form a design or picture.

Bulgari Founded in Rome in 1884 by Sotirios Voulgaris, who changed his name to Bulgari, the company continued to expand after World War 2 with the introduction of its renowned Serpenti collection of bracelet-watches. During the 1950s and 60s Bulgari continued to make its name for use of multi-colored stones, creating pieces for Elizabeth Taylor, Ingrid Bergman and Gina Lollobrigida. Today the house continues to be known for angular forms, strong colors, cabochon gems and enduring collections such as Serpenti and Parentesi.
