Onyx Onyx is a variety of chalcedony. The use of onyx in jewelry dates back to biblical times, described as part of the jeweled breastplate worn by Aaron as well as in the works of Pliny the Elder in the first century.

Pavé Set The technique of pavé (“pa-vay,”) setting involves setting small diamonds closely together with as little visible prongs or metal holding the stones, giving the impression of seamless sparkle. Pavé setting dates back to the 1700s with increased popularity in the 1900s through the present.

Rose Cut The rose cut originated in the 1500's and were cut by hand and meant to be beautiful in the candlelight conditions of the time. The name 'rose" for this cut comes from its facets, which are said to resemble petals in a rose bud. The rose cut features a flat base and domed top featuring 3 to 24 facets. As this cut has a flat base, it gives a softer, gentler light than a fully faceted brilliant cut. It also gives a larger face-up appearance than a brilliant cut of similar carat weight, as it carries all of its weight above the flat base.

Round Brilliant-Cut The Round Brilliant Cut dates back to 1919, when Marcel Tolkowsky calculated a formula for proportional diamond design to maximize fire, brilliance and wearability, published as “Diamond Design: A Study of the Reflection and Refraction of Light in Diamond.” A round brilliant diamond can also be called a full cut diamond if it features the cutting standard of 57 or 58 facets.

The Gem Palace One of the largest South Asian empires in history, the Mughal Empire (1526-1857) continues to influence luxury high jewelry design, in direct elements such the 'Tutti-Frutti' carved jewels of Cartier, the sautoir designs of the 1920s and 1970s in particular, as well as necklaces and earrings set with enamel and cabochon gems in the Mughal style in the late 1960s and early 1970s in major French houses such as Van Cleef and Arpels and Boucheron. The Kasliwal family were jewelers to the Mughal Emperors, famed for their enamelwork, and intricate carving and setting of precious stones as well as rose cut diamonds. In 1725, the Kasliwals moved to Jaipur, India from Agra as the crown jewelers to Maharaja Jai Singh, and have remained in Jaipur ever since. The Gem Palace opened in 1923 and immediately became a favorite of royal families, dignitaries and celebrities worldwide, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Princess Diana and Bill Clinton. The Gem Palace is run by the 9th generation of the family.
