Diamond Running Fox Tiepin, 1870.

SKU: J0220

Running fox tiepin set with ruby cabochon eye and old European cut diamonds, 18K white gold, 1870.

Unique Elements
To begin with, this sly fox dates from 1870. Her body is formed of hand cut Old European diamonds, each with its own unique pattern of reflections. The cherry on top? Her eye is a hand cut Burma ruby. These stones and this craftsmanship is exceptionally rare- wear this fox at the waist or neck of a little black dress or at the tie or lapel of a suit or tuxedo.

Old European Cut The Old European Cut, the precursor to the round brilliant, is an 1890-1930 hand cut round with good symmetry and an open culet, meaning a flat facet at the bottom of the diamond instead of the sharp point of a modern round brilliant cut.

Ruby Ruby is called “the king of gems” in Sanskrit. Rubies have obtained the highest per-carat price of any colored stone. Ruby is a variety of corundum, a mineral species that also includes sapphire. Rubies range from orangey red to pure red to purplish red. Trace elements of chromium cause ruby’s red color. Ruby is the July birthstone and the stone for the 15th and 40th anniversaries.

Cabochon A cabochon is a gem which has been shaped and polished but not faceted, typically with a domed top and flat bottom. Cabochons are often cut for opaque stones, for softer translucent gems as well as to highlight phenomenon such as asterism “star” and chatoyancy “cat’s eye”, as these would not show in faceted stones. The 'sugarloaf' cabochon cut features a 4-sided pyramid shape.
