Gold, Emerald, and Onyx ‘Panthère’ Ring, Cartier

SKU: J0540

18K yellow gold ring featuring a Panther head with pear shaped emerald eyes, onyx cabochon noses, signed Cartier. Size 6, expandable.

Unique Elements
Cartier’s first use of the panther motif was a 1914 watch with diamonds and onyx set in platinum. The panther has been an enduring symbol of the house ever since, and this ring of a panther head with emerald eyes and onyx nose is iconic Cartier.

Onyx Onyx is a variety of chalcedony. The use of onyx in jewelry dates back to biblical times, described as part of the jeweled breastplate worn by Aaron as well as in the works of Pliny the Elder in the first century.

Emerald The name emerald comes from the ancient Greek word for green and is the green to greenish blue variety of beryl. If a stone is “too light” to be an emerald, it is called a green beryl, although there is no agreement as to exactly where this distinction applies. Emeralds have been mined since 330BC and were used in Cleopatra’s jewelry, as well as by royalty throughout the world. Emerald is the birthstone of May and the stone of the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.

Cartier “The jeweller of kings and the king of jewelers," Cartier was founded in 1847 in Paris by Louis-François Cartier , and remained a family business until 1964. Cartier has produced jewelry for royal families worldwide, as well as clients including Princess Grace, Elizabeth Taylor, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Jean Cocteau.
